A delegation of the Nigerian Youth Parliament (NYP) condoled with the family of late Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, a University of Benin (UNIBEN) undergraduate who died after she was gang-raped by unknown men inside a church in Benin.

The delegation was received by the mother of the deceased, Mrs Omozuwa and other members of the family, at their residence, on Monday.

The NYP House Minority Leader, Hon. Uwadia Daniel Didi who led the delegation, expressed his sadness over the death of Miss Vera and promised to ensure the Parliament does everything within its powers to get justice for the deceased.

The family however thanked the Parliament for its efforts in ensuring justice is done to the perpetrators.

Shortly after, the delegation met with the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Johnson Kukomo and were briefed on progress made so far in the apprehension of two suspects linked to the murder of the deceased.

On his part, Kukomo stressed that sexual offences is not only a crime against the victims but also a crime against the state, and assured that the Command, under his watch, will personally prosecute sexual offenders even when the families of the victims decides to drop the case.

He called on the NYP to carry out more sensitization programs on the implications of rape and other social abuses

The Nigerian Youth Parliament, being under the tutelage of the National Assembly and funded by the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development, is a non partisan umbrella body for the Nigerian Youths and a platform through which their voices could be heard on government policies that affect them directly.
