Meta has launched a new artificial intelligence model, Muse Spark, as it seeks to strengthen its position in the competitive AI market dominated by Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic.

The model is the first product from Meta’s newly established AI division, following the recruitment of Alexandr Wang to lead its “superintelligence” initiative under CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Meta said Muse Spark is designed to be smaller and faster than previous models while maintaining strong reasoning capabilities in areas such as science, mathematics and health. The model reportedly outperforms Meta’s earlier systems in writing and reasoning, although it still trails competitors in coding tasks.

The announcement comes shortly after Anthropic opted not to release its latest model due to cybersecurity concerns, highlighting the increasing scrutiny surrounding advanced AI systems.

Muse Spark will be deployed across Meta’s platforms, including WhatsApp and Instagram, and will also be available via a standalone application. The company plans to offer developer access through an API as part of a new revenue strategy.

Meta said it may open-source future versions of the model, diverging from its current proprietary approach.
