JUST IN: FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday to Honour Buhari

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, a public holiday in honour of Nigeria’s late former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The declaration comes in continuation of the seven-day national mourning period earlier announced to mark the passing of the late statesman.

According to a press statement signed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the public holiday is intended as a mark of respect for Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s democracy, governance, and national development.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the Interior Minister stated. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”

Citizens are urged to observe the day in honour of the late president’s legacy by promoting peace, patriotism, and national cohesion—ideals he championed throughout his public service.

As part of the mourning protocols, national flags are to fly at half-mast across the country from Sunday, 13 July, throughout the seven-day mourning period.

The Federal Government extended its condolences to the family of the late president, the government and people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
