The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on Wednesday on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
The minister congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary and urged citizens to use the occasion to promote national unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
Tunji-Ojo stressed that peace and stability remained essential to national development, calling on Nigerians to draw inspiration from the love for country demonstrated by the nation’s founding fathers.
He said Nigeria’s diversity remained a strength and expressed optimism that collective determination would provide the foundation for a stronger and more prosperous nation.
“As we celebrate 66th years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength,” the minister said.
Tunji-Ojo also assured Nigerians of the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening national security and improving public safety, while creating an environment where citizens can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.
He further reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to pursuing a better Nigeria under its Renewed Hope Agenda.
The minister urged Nigerians to use the Independence celebration as an opportunity to renew their commitment to national unity and peaceful coexistence.
Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, and will mark its 66th anniversary on Thursday.
