FG Names KWAM 1 Aviation Security Ambassador After Ease Flight Ban

The Federal Government has appointed Fuji music icon, Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an Aviation Security Ambassador, following the resolution of his recent dispute with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, announced the appointment on Wednesday after consultations with stakeholders in the aviation sector. The development comes alongside the decision to reduce KWAM 1’s earlier flight ban to one month and withdraw criminal complaints against him.

According to Keyamo, the appointment is part of efforts to strengthen awareness and compliance with airport safety protocols. He explained that the Fuji star will work closely with aviation authorities to promote orderly conduct among passengers and respect for security procedures at Nigerian airports.

“This is not just about lifting a ban; it is about turning a challenging situation into an opportunity for public enlightenment. KWAM 1 will use his influence to encourage Nigerians to abide by aviation rules, ensuring safety and order for all,” the minister said.

The move follows an incident involving KWAM 1 aboard a ValueJet flight, which had initially attracted sanctions from the NCAA. As part of the resolution, ValueJet pilots involved in the incident will also have their licences restored after serving a one-month suspension and completing mandatory professional reappraisal.

Keyamo further disclosed that the government will begin a sector-wide retraining programme for security personnel on handling disruptive passengers and de-escalating tensions. Airlines are also expected to review their staff conduct policies towards travellers.

“These decisions are purely on compassionate grounds, but they also reflect our commitment to safety, order, and respect in the aviation space,” Keyamo added.
