FG Hands Over Federal Roads to Abia Government for Swift Completion
The Federal Government has handed over several key federal roads in Abia State to the state government for completion, in a move aimed at accelerating infrastructure delivery through collaboration between federal and state authorities.
The handover ceremony was held at Enyimba International Stadium, Aba, in honour of Governor Alex Otti.
The roads include the Owerri–Umuaka Road, Onuigbo–Umuahia Road, Omezuo Bridge, and Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road.
The handover followed approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who authorised Governor Otti to take charge of construction, reconstruction, and rehabilitation works on these projects.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, highlighted the proactive role of Governor Otti in taking responsibility for the projects.
“These roads have faced delays for years due to funding and management challenges. Abia is showing how federal-state collaboration can change that,” he said.
Governor Otti thanked the President for granting approval and described the move as a critical step in improving transport infrastructure and socio-economic activities in the state.
He stressed that the State has stepped in to complete federal projects in the past when necessary, saying, “The end justifies the means.”
Earlier, Minister Umahi and Governor Otti visited ongoing work on Section II (Umuahia Tower–Aba) of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Dual Carriageway, where contractors were given 30 days to complete the remaining Aba-bound segment following delays and quality concerns.
They also inspected Section IV (Aba–Port Harcourt), where part of the project was reassigned to indigenous contractor Trucret (Nig.) Limited for emergency repairs.
The roads, originally awarded in January 2017 with a 30-month completion period, include upgrades to eight-lane highways with service lanes at key towns. When completed, they are expected to improve traffic flow, enhance access to seaports and industrial facilities, and boost economic activity along the corridor.
