The bill seeking to raise academic qualification for the election into office of the president and governor has passed second reading at the senate.

The constitution amendment bill which was sponsored by a senator representing Plateau North, Gyang Istifanus, scaled through second reading on Thursday, during plenary session in the red chamber.

The bill, if eventually approved by the senate, will make the minimum academic qualification for president a Higher National Diploma (HND) or its equivalent and that of a governor and members of the national assembly a National Diploma (ND) or its equivalent.

The minimum qualification, according to the current constitution, for an individual to contest for the above positions is school certificate level or its equivalent.
