American rapper Nicki Minaj has praised President Donald Trump, crediting his leadership with changing the mood in the United States and giving Americans renewed hope for the future.
Minaj made the remarks on Sunday while appearing alongside Trump at a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, where the president was drumming up support for Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
According to the rapper, Trump’s return to office has given many Americans something to look forward to, particularly those who had become discouraged about the country’s direction.
“He’s changed the energy of our country, and he’s given us a future to look forward to,” Minaj told the crowd, urging voters to support Republican candidates.
She described the forthcoming elections as a critical moment for the country, calling on supporters to help elect Republican candidates and sustain the political movement associated with Trump.
Dressed in a gold-coloured Gucci outfit, the rapper led the audience in chants praising the president. Trump, in turn, commended her as she left the stage, describing her as beautiful and intelligent.
Minaj travelled to Michigan aboard Air Force One with Trump. During the journey, she also appeared in a light-hearted video with a presidential aide, jokingly pretending to interview for the position of White House press secretary.
The rapper has previously described herself as Trump’s number-one fan, although she criticised some of his policies during his first term. In recent months, however, she has publicly supported several positions associated with his administration, including his proposed Gold Card immigration programme and his advocacy over the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
The rally comes amid an intensifying political contest ahead of the US midterm elections, which will determine the balance of power in Congress.
In Michigan, Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers is facing Democratic challenger Abdul El-Sayed. Trump criticised El-Sayed during his remarks, making comments about the candidate’s Muslim faith that the Democrat has described as Islamophobic.
Former US President Barack Obama also campaigned in Michigan on Saturday in support of Democratic candidates, highlighting the competing efforts by both parties to mobilise voters ahead of the elections.
