Joe Biden, United State Democratic presidential candidate, has reacted to the killings of unarmed Nigerians protesting against police brutality allegedly by security operatives in the country.

Recall on Tuesday night, some soldiers, in viral videos on social media, were seen opening fire at peaceful ENDSARS protesters at Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos State. This, despite the series of attacks by hoodlums against demonstrators across the country.

While many have accused the Nigerian Army for the killings and injuries sustained in the incident in Lagos, they, however, denied the shootings, stating that none of its personnel were at the scene.

Biden, in a statement on Wednesday, while sympathising with those who lost loved ones in the violence, urged President Buhari to stop the crackdown on the ENDSARS protesters.

He also asked the President to engage in a good-faith dialogue with civil society to address the long-standing grievances of the demonstrators.

“I urge President Buhari and the Nigerian military to cease the violent crackdown on protesters in Nigeria, which has already resulted in several deaths.

“My heart goes out to all those who have lost a loved one in the violence.

“The United States must stand with Nigerians who are peacefully demonstrating for police reform and seeking an end to corruption in their democracy.

“I encourage the government to engage in a good-faith dialogue with civil society to address these long-standing grievances and work together for a more just and inclusive Nigeria.”
