Yemi-Esan Harps on ACFTA’s Success

As the emerging African ‘Integration Agenda’, the African Continental Free Trade Area, ACFTA, will rely on the competence and skill of public servants at the national level to achieve its lofty objectives of increasing inter-Africa trade, while accelerating the socio-economic development of the African Union member States.

This was the view of Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, at a public service lecture to commemorate the ‘2023 Civil Service Week’, in Abuja.

“According to the African Union, the theme for this Year’s Africa Public Service Day is, “The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) will require a fit for purpose African public administration to succeed”.

“Invariably, this theme interrogates intra-African trade and productivity of the continent against the backdrop of the ambitious aspirations of Agenda 2063.

“The Agenda, seeks to build a prosperous and integrated Africa with significant improvement in the living standards of the people, deeper democratic values and the attainment of a peaceful, just and well-governed continent,” she said.

Yemi-Esan separately added that efforts aimed at transforming the Nigerian Federal Civil Service through the digitalization of its work processes have begun to yield the desired results.

In a goodwill message, Wale Edun, a minister-designate and Special Adviser on Monetary Policies to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said the federal government is mindful of the ongoing implementation of the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan 2020 – 2025 (FCSSIP25).

He said: “This administration will provide necessary impetus for the realization of the lofty goals of the plan and also take necessary measures to consolidate its gain, by ensuring that a successor plan is put in place to build on its achievements”.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Queenet Iheoma-Hart, a staff in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, also unveiled her collection of books during a ‘Books and Arts Exhibition’ in the sideline of the public service lecture.

The two books of the Assistant Chief Information Officer, ACIO, are titled: “The Travails of Widowhood” and “Path to Freedom”.

Iheoma-Hart, aside from being a civil servant, is also a researcher and writer. She has particular interest in peace and gender advancement. She is also an expert in peace and conflict resolution, who is currently running her PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies.
