The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to staying ahead of emerging security threats, declaring that the force will remain proactive, responsive, and uncompromising in defending the nation.

General Shaibu gave the assurance on Thursday during a courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, at Government House, Enugu. The COAS was in the state as part of activities marking the 2nd Regimental Sergeant Majors’ (RSM) Convention 2025 hosted by the Nigerian Army.

Addressing the Governor, General Shaibu applauded the sustained cooperation between the Enugu State Government, security agencies and the military, noting that such synergy has been pivotal to the improving security atmosphere in the South East.

He assured that the Army under his leadership will continue to adopt intelligence-led operations, strengthen inter-agency collaboration, and deploy highly trained personnel to neutralise threats across the country.

“The Nigerian Army will remain proactive in tackling the security challenges confronting the nation. With stronger collaboration among the armed forces, security agencies, and the public, insecurity will soon be a thing of the past,” General Shaibu stated.

Responding, Governor Mbah praised the Army Chief for what he described as a “decisive, disciplined and methodical leadership style” since assuming office. He noted that he had followed the activities of the COAS closely and was impressed by his operational impact across various theatres of operation.

“Your appointment came as no surprise to those who know your record in the North East and other formations,” the Governor said. “Enugu is honoured to host you and the senior officers for the RSM Convention.”

Earlier, the COAS visited troops of 82 Division at both the Division Headquarters and the Forward Operations Base in Ivo, Abia State. He commended their dedication, sacrifices and operational successes, reassuring them that their welfare—especially accommodation—remains a top priority.

He urged the soldiers to uphold professionalism and remain proud ambassadors of the Nigerian Army.

Later in the day, General Shaibu attended the closing ceremony of the 2nd RSM Convention with the theme “RSM Roles in Operational Readiness and Combat Effectiveness.”

Describing the convention as a significant milestone and his first major engagement as COAS, the Army Chief said the forum provided a platform for critical discussions that would fortify discipline, regimentation and leadership across all units of the service.

On his part, the Chief of Administration (Army), Major General Isa Abdullahi, commended the RSMs for their commitment to maintaining discipline within the ranks, stating that the convention had sharpened their leadership capacity and deepened their understanding of regimental duties.
