President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally endorsed Obafemi Hamzat as the consensus governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos.
The endorsement came during a high-level meeting with members of the Governance Advisory Council, led by Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi, alongside Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The development is being seen as a major political signal ahead of the 2027 governorship race, as the ruling party moves early to consolidate internal unity and streamline succession plans in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
Hamzat, who currently serves as deputy governor, has long been regarded as one of the most experienced figures in the Lagos political structure, with a track record in governance and public administration. His emergence through consensus is expected to calm internal rivalries and strengthen the party’s electoral preparations.
Meanwhile, fresh political calculations may also involve Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, who officially joined the APC last year. On Tuesday, reports indicated that he purchased the party’s Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the Lagos governorship contest, while reaffirming loyalty to the APC leadership and support for direct primaries.
Party insiders say Jandor could be considered for the deputy governorship slot as part of a broader balancing strategy aimed at widening the APC’s appeal and strengthening cohesion ahead of the polls.
The endorsement of Hamzat also reinforces President Tinubu’s enduring influence in Lagos politics, where he remains a central force in determining the direction of the ruling party. Political observers believe the move could reshape early alignments, with opposition parties expected to recalibrate their strategies in response.
