The Vice Chancellor of Baze University, Abuja, Professor Mamman Tahir, has been nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a minister, subject to screening and confirmation by the Senate.

Baze University is owned by Datti Baba-Ahmed, the running mate of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party.

His nomination by Tinubu despite working in an establishment owned by one of his opponents in the last presidential election has come as a surprise to a lot of political watchers even though the nominee has an intimidating profile worthy of being a minister.

He made the second batch of Tinubu’s ministerial list sent to the Nigerian Senate on Wednesday.

Prof Mamman hails from Adamawa state. He is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Professor of Law.

He was the Director-general of the Nigeria Law School from 2005 to 2013.

As a recognised member of the Body of Benchers, in 2010 he became a board member of the International Association of Law Schools based in Washington DC.

In September 2015, he was conferred as a SAN.

In recognition of his efforts, the Federal Government of Nigeria also bestowed him with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

He sojourn into the murky waters of politics began in 2014 after completing his tenure as Director General of The Nigeria Law School.

He ran for Adamawa state Governorship election on the platform of the APC in December 2014 along with three other aspirants.

In June 2020 the APC national executive committee appointed and inaugurated him as a Member representing the northeast geopolitical zone. He was also acting national vice chairman north east in the National Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) of the party.

He holds the chieftaincy titles of Dan Ruwata Adamawa Emirate and Dokajin Mubi of Adamawa state.
