Supreme Council for Shariah Leaders seek Military Collaboration to Address Root Causes of Insecurity

The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has urged the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, to collaborate  with religious organizations to address the root causes of insecurity in the country.

In a meeting with the CDS on Thursday, SCSN leaders said that the current military approach need to be re-address to curtailed insecurity,  saying that more needs to be done to address the underlying factors that are driving people to violence.

In a release, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau,  Director, Defence Information, today in Abuja.

Dr Bashir Aliyu Umar, team leader of the SCSN delegation, said that religious organizations have a unique role to play in addressing the root causes of insecurity, as they have direct access to communities and can help to promote dialogue and understanding.

He also called for a review of the existing security architecture, and for the military to adopt a more human-centered approach to addressing insecurity.

General Musa welcomed the SCSN leaders’ call for collaboration, and said that the military is committed to working with religious organizations to find lasting solutions to the country’s security challenges.

He also pledged to improve the military’s human rights record, and to ensure that its operations are conducted in accordance with international law.

According to the release,  “During my tenure as the theatre Commander in the North East, about 75,000 members of the Boko Haram and family surrendered.

The numbers have now risen above 100,00. He assured the visitors of his readiness to partner with religious organisations to  resolve security challenges.”

The CDS however pledged for improvement in military operations, while calling for new innovation to arrest insecurity in Nigeria.
