A singer, Ijeoma Ononobi, aka Ijekimora, has called for an end to female artistes being sexualised in the music industry.

Speaking in an interview with Saturday Beats, she acknowledged that though show business involved creating a personality that people could be attracted to, balancing her individuality and public perception was something she was very conscious about. She said, “Yes, sex sells, but I do not put that at the forefront, even though I might have that type of appeal. I am strongly against sexualising the female gender, especially artistes like me. In all that I do, I aim to convey confidence, empowerment and artistic expression through my style. I remain very true to myself while crafting messages through my music that would resonate positively with my audience.”

On what inspired her to pursue a career in music in the first place, the singer said, “My love for music has deep roots in my cultural background and personal experiences. The desire to share my stories and emotions through music led me to pursue a career as a singer. Also, while growing up, I had an interesting personality that people often commended. I always looked for a way I could give expression to that personality inside me, and music was the closest; followed by acting, which I would be doing more of this year.”
