Saudi Arabia’s air defense systems have successfully intercepted multiple drones targeting key oil infrastructure, including the strategic Shaybah oil field, in a fresh wave of attacks linked to rising regional tensions.
The Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense confirmed on Thursday that at least five drones were intercepted and destroyed in the Empty Quarter while heading toward the Shaybah oil field, one of the country’s major crude production hubs in the southeast.
Earlier in the day, an additional 20 drones were shot down in the Eastern Region, according to official statements posted by the ministry. Authorities described the incidents as part of a coordinated series of attempted aerial assaults.
An enemy drone was also intercepted while attempting to approach Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter, a high-security zone that houses several foreign embassies and international missions. No casualties or damage were reported in any of the incidents.
The attempted strike on the Shaybah oil field underscores the continued targeting of Saudi energy infrastructure amid escalating hostilities in the Gulf. Since late February, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states have faced repeated missile and drone attacks following military action by the United States and Israel against Iran.
Recent attacks have reportedly targeted Prince Sultan Air Base, the US Embassy in Riyadh, oil facilities, and other strategic installations across the Kingdom.
Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman condemned the attacks during a phone call with his Turkish counterpart, reaffirming the Kingdom’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and critical infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the Saudi Foreign Ministry welcomed the adoption of a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an end to attacks against Gulf states and Jordan, describing it as a necessary step toward restoring regional stability
The latest attempted assault on the Shaybah oil field highlights the fragile security environment in the Gulf and the increasing risks facing global energy supplies as geopolitical tensions persist
