The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old arms trader and also taken into custody a suspected Chinese illegal miner in separate operations within the state.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Akwuzu, acting on credible intelligence, apprehended one Akpan Godwin, 65, in Nkpor, Onitsha, on 22nd August 2025. He was found with 1,100 rounds of live ammunition.

Ikenga disclosed that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to engaging in the illegal sale of ammunition and mentioned other accomplices involved in the illicit trade. He added that investigations and a manhunt for collaborators have since been intensified.

In a separate operation the same evening, the police, through operatives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, received a suspected illegal Chinese miner from members of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade).

The suspect, identified as Mu Hua Qiang, aged 45 and resident in Aguleri, was arrested over his alleged involvement in illegal mining activities in the Aguleri axis. Police confirmed that his statement has been voluntarily obtained, and he is currently in lawful custody for further investigation.

The Police Command assured residents that further developments on both cases would be communicated in due course while reiterating its commitment to clamping down on criminal activities in the state.
