The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has welcomed the $800 million Final Investment Decision (FID) reached on the Ima Gas Project, describing the development as a major step in strengthening Nigeria’s upstream gas sector.
The offshore project, located in Oil Mining Leases (OMLs) 112 and 117, is being developed by AMNI International in partnership with TotalEnergies. At peak production, the project is expected to deliver about 300 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.
According to NNPC Ltd., the gas will provide critical feedstock for the expansion of Nigeria LNG Limited’s Train 7 project at Bonny Island, which is expected to raise the plant’s production capacity from 22 million tonnes per annum to 30 million tonnes.
The Final Investment Decision was announced on September 23, following years of efforts to commercialise the Ima gas resource, which was discovered in 1973 but remained undeveloped for more than five decades.
Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the FID as “a decisive vote of confidence” in Nigeria’s gas sector and the reforms aimed at creating more competitive terms and a predictable investment environment.
The company said the project was facilitated by Presidential Directives issued in 2024, which introduced fiscal incentives for non-associated gas developments, streamlined contracting processes and helped reduce development costs.
Ima is the fourth major gas project to reach FID under the current administration, following the Iseni, Ubeta and HI projects.
NNPC Ltd. also commended the collaboration between AMNI International, TotalEnergies and Nigerian financial institutions, describing the combination of indigenous participation, international technical expertise and domestic financing as a model for future gas developments.
The company said the project would contribute to Nigeria’s wider efforts to expand gas production and utilisation, support industrial activity and create opportunities for investment and employment.
NNPC Ltd. reaffirmed its commitment to working with the government, regulators and industry partners to sustain investment in the gas sector and accelerate the development of Nigeria’s natural gas resources.
