More reactions by eminent Nigerians have continued to trail the recent electricity tariff increase amid the impact of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

Atiku Abubakar, former vice president, in reaction to the electricity tariff hike, described the action by the government as an “impetuous disregard for the challenges” many face in the country, stating that what Nigerians need after coming out of months -long lockdown was stimulus package.

“I reject the increased electricity tariffs. Coming out of the lockdown, Nigerians need a stimulus, not an impetuous disregard for the challenges they face,” Tweeted on Thursday.

“Many Nigerians have not earned an income for months, due to no fault of theirs.

“This increase is ill-timed and ill-advised.”

MERIDIAN SPY reported days ago the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) confirmed that poor and vulnerable Nigerians will not be affected by the planned increase in electricity tariff.

James Momoh, NERC Chairman, explained that unmetered customers will not experience any cost increase beyond what is chargeable to metered customers in the same area.

Momoh said tariffs for those consuming 50KW or less remain frozen. “Customers receiving less than 12 hours of supply will also not experience any change in tariffs,” he added.
