Nigeria, Poland Explore Defence Cooperation to Boost Security

Nigeria and Poland have opened talks on strengthening defence cooperation as part of efforts to enhance security within Nigeria and across the West African sub-region.

The Polish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Michał Cygan, disclosed this on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, at the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Cygan described Nigeria as a stabilising force in West Africa, citing the role of the Nigerian Armed Forces particularly the Nigerian Air Force in counter-insurgency operations and regional security initiatives.

He praised the professionalism and resilience of Nigerian troops, noting that Nigeria’s strategic position and sustained security engagements have continued to contribute to peace and stability in the region.

The ambassador said Poland was interested in exploring practical areas of defence collaboration with Nigeria, especially in support of counter-insurgency operations and capacity development.

Responding, Air Marshal Aneke emphasised the importance of international partnerships in addressing contemporary and asymmetric security threats.

He said the Nigerian Air Force remained committed to leveraging cooperation with friendly nations to enhance operational effectiveness, training, and information sharing.

The Air Chief reaffirmed the NAF’s openness to mutually beneficial defence partnerships that would strengthen its counter-insurgency capabilities and support Nigeria’s national security objectives.

Discussions during the visit focused on possible areas of bilateral defence cooperation, including support for ongoing air operations against insurgent and criminal elements across the country.
