The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to peace, unity and national development as the country celebrates its 66th Independence Anniversary.
The party, in a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, acknowledged that Nigeria had yet to attain its desired level of development but urged citizens not to despair.
The PDP said Nigeria remained endowed with enormous human and natural resources capable of driving national progress if properly harnessed.
It called on Nigerians to reject violence and corruption, while urging leaders and citizens to place the national interest above personal and sectional considerations.
The party also urged Nigerians to harness the country’s ethnic, cultural and religious diversity as a source of unity, creativity and national progress.
The PDP said there was a need to build a Nigeria where young people could pursue their dreams and aspirations with confidence and hope.
It reaffirmed its commitment to democracy, good governance and the welfare of Nigerians, saying it would continue to provide an alternative platform towards realising the country’s potential.
The party also called on Nigerians to honour the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers and others who contributed to national development.
“Together, let us renew our commitment to building a better Nigeria and restoring hope for the younger generations. Nigeria has what it takes to rise! Nigeria shall be great!! Happy 66th Independence Anniversary, Nigeria,” the PDP said.
