The  Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said on Monday that 69,376 Nigerians completed their online pre-registration for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise within the first seven hours of commencement.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the registration portal, which went live at 8:30 a.m., had already attracted massive interest by 3:30 p.m.

“Of this figure, 33,803 (48.7 per cent) are male, while 35,573 (51.3 per cent) are female. In terms of age, 48,033 (69.2 per cent) are young persons aged 18–34,” he said.

Olumekun explained that the portal would remain active round the clock and urged eligible citizens who had not registered to take advantage of the opportunity.

He added that in-person registration would begin on Monday, 25 August 2025, at INEC’s 811 state and local government offices nationwide, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on weekdays. This option, he said, would allow those who prefer physical registration to participate while also enabling online applicants to complete their process.

The commission also announced that weekly updates on the CVR exercise would be released from next week, with breakdowns by state, gender, age, occupation and disability.

INEC reminded Nigerians that registration is open only to citizens aged 18 and above who have not previously registered. It warned that double or multiple registration is illegal, but transfers and replacement of lost or damaged voter cards are permitted during the exercise.
