How Soldier’s Warning Shot Kills Teenage Protester in Zaria– Army Spokesman

A 16-year-old protester, Ismail Mohammed, was killed by a soldier’s warning shot during a protest in Samaru, Zaria, on August 6, 2024, Nigerian Army said on Wednesday.

Army Spokesman, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, explained that troops responded to a distress call about hoodlums burning tires and pelting stones at security personnel.

He said upon arrival, the hoodlums allegedly attacked the troops, prompting a soldier to fire a warning shot to scare them away.

“Unfortunately, the warning shot hit and killed the 16-year-old boy. The soldier involved has been arrested and is undergoing interrogation,” Nwachukwu stated.

He said the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, has sent a delegation to condole with the deceased’s family.

“The Nigerian Army attended Mohammed’s burial, which was conducted according to Islamic rites. The incident is under investigation,” he added.

The spokesman emphasized that the troops were enforcing a curfew imposed by the State Government when the incident occurred.
