Google has officially declared the imminent closure of its long-standing service, Google Play Movies & TV, signalling a strategic shift towards the ascendant Google TV. While this move may seem like the end of an era, Google assures users that previously purchased content will remain accessible, providing a seamless transition to the evolving realm of Google TV.

The transition plan has been meticulously executed, commencing with the migration of Android and iOS users to the Google TV app. The tech giant has taken further steps by discontinuing the app on Roku devices and most smart TVs, solidifying its commitment to the new direction. Notably, in October, Google took a decisive step by removing the Google Play Movies & TV app from Android TV, marking a strategic pivot in its entertainment offerings.

In a recently released support document, Google outlines the roadmap for users to continue enjoying their purchased content even after the January shutdown. Android TV device owners, from January 17 onwards, can access and rent content seamlessly from the Shop tab. Cable and Android TV set-top boxes offer viewing and rental capabilities through the YouTube app, with YouTube emerging as the primary platform for content access in web browsers.

The transition from Google Play Movies & TV has been characterized by a deliberate and gradual process. According to insights from 9to5Google, the app on Android TV has already started redirecting users to the Store tab, ensuring a smooth shift to the new system without causing significant inconvenience. Notably, the preservation of previously purchased content sets Google apart from other industry moves, such as Sony’s decision to remove user-purchased Discovery content from its libraries.

Google’s consolidation of its entertainment platforms aligns with industry trends, with Apple also streamlining its offerings through an updated TV app. This strategic move positions Google TV as a central player in the digital entertainment landscape, offering users a cohesive and enriched viewing experience.
