GOOD SAMARITANS: Gov Mutfwang Mourns Imam Who Protected 200 Christians During Plateau 2018 Crisis

Abubakar Abdullahi, the respected Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, has passed away at the age of 90. The cleric, widely admired for protecting 262 Christians during violent communal clashes in 2018, died Thursday night at Plateau Specialist Hospital, Jos, his son Saleh Abubakar confirmed.

According to Saleh, his father had been battling heart issues for some time. “He passed away ten days after being admitted,” he said. “His health had been unstable since he was first diagnosed. He had regular check-ups, but the condition persisted.”

Imam Abdullahi leaves behind a large family of 19 children, comprising 12 sons and seven daughters.

In June 2018, as faith-based conflicts erupted across ten villages in Barkin Ladi, Imam Abdullahi courageously sheltered hundreds of Christians in his mosque and home, keeping them safe until the violence subsided. His actions earned him national and international recognition, including the International Religious Freedom Award from the U.S. Department of State in 2019.

He is scheduled to be laid to rest today after Jumma’at prayers in Nghar village, where his legacy of courage and interfaith solidarity will be remembered
