Femi Anikulapo-Kuti, son of late legendary singer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has given reasons why he pull out from participating in the occupy Nigeria protest in Ojota which was occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy and increase in pump price of fuel by then administration of former president Goodluck Jonathan.

In a series of tweets on Friday, the ace singer explained that he initially thought the conveners of the protest were genuine in their struggle, but realising that it was politically motivated, he decided to distance himself.

“I want to state for clarity and posterity my role in the Ojota protest. I was invited for what I and many believed was a genuine cause regarding the cost of fuel,” he tweeted.

“As soon as I found out it was politically motivated I pulled out. I got a lot of backlash at the time but stood my ground.”

In emphasising his discountenance for political parties he feels not bearing the peoples’ interest at heart, Femi went on to reveal that he rejected political advance from Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to join the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

“For the record I have NEVER and will NEVER affiliate with any political party that I don’t feel has the genuine interest of the people of Nigeria at heart,” he noted.

“Even when the VP approached me to join APC, I blatantly refused as I also refused to join PDP or any other political party.”

Since the announcement of the new electricity tariff and fuel price hike, many have called for a mass action as similarly done in 2012 during former president Jonathan administration.

Some have beckoned on influential personalities to like manner begin the campaign to motivate others to join the struggle in order to force the present administration to rescind its decision.

Although some groups like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) youths, the Northern Coalition Group (NCG) and a host of others have threatened to mobilise its members for a nationwide protest if the government fails to reverse its decision.
