Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Farouk Yahaya (rtd), has joined others to unveil a book in honor of the former Commandant of the Nigeria Defence Academy, Major General Ibrahim Manu Yusuf (rtd).

This book is a compendium of written tributes dedicated to General Yusuf and intended to serve as a guiding manuscript for junior officers.

Tittled ‘Welfare, Command And Capacity Building In Nigeria,’ the literary work was formally unveiled at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja.

“This is a compilation of well-rounded experiences from both those who mentored him and his superiors, all of whom contributed to the creation of this book,” he said.

General Yahaya emphasised the importance for commanders to prioritise the well-being and consistent training of their subordinates.

“They should delve into the very essence of how one achieves outcomes, akin to the intricacies of military warfare,” he added.

In his speech, the celebrant said the book was meant to serve as a motivator for the upcoming generation of officers and men, and also his own way of giving back to the military.

“Furthermore, this book is an embodiment of social responsibility and a programme for nurturing capabilities, a realm into which our nation has fervently invested during my tenure in service.”

“This book compilation of our experiences in countering insurgency and terrorism, ensuring that the fledgling cadre of officers is adequately equipped to grapple with these multifaceted challenges.

“With these invaluable experiences, we are dedicated to nurturing the future and build the capacity of our Armed Forces’ officers,” he said.

On the anticipated impact of the book, he noted, “We have already begun witnessing the influence of our capacity-building initiatives. One of our officers recently displayed exceptional courage during a testing exercise, wherein a rating officer faced distress overboard. The swift response of a naval officer resulted in a successful rescue within 18 minutes. This is an aspect of training that was hitherto untapped.”

“Within mere days of undergoing this training, we have witnessed commendable exploits, particularly by those cadets from NDA who were sent to the Royal Military Academy. They have gone on to achieve laurels aplenty, a testament to the training they received here in Nigeria.”
