The ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) has underplayed the defection of embattled Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki and his Deputy, Philip Shaibu to the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing it as insignificant.
The party’s spokesperson, Lanre Issa-Onilu told The Nation that Obaseki’s move to the PDP was never a surprise.
“It has not come to us as a surprise. We knew he had defected long ago because he resigned his membership of the party which we have accepted,” said Issa-Onilu.
“So you can’t defect twice. So if he is defecting again, we don’t know whether what he has just done now is news any longer.”
Obaseki resigned from the APC after its screening committee disqualified him from the June 22 governorship primary.
The NWC last Saturday affirmed his disqualification by the screening and appeal committees.
The PDP Friday welcomed the governor and his deputy to its fold and shifted the party’s governorship primary election date to grant the duo waiver to wrest against other aspirants for the governorship ticket of the party, ahead of the September gubernatorial election in the state.
