A man, whose is yet to be identified, becomes the first to die of complications from coronavirus in Ondo State.

Responding to questions in a radio programme, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Wahab Adegbenro, confirmed the death of the COVID-19 patient, stating that the deceased was a man who came into the state from Lagos State after testing positive for the virus.

Adegbenro said the deceased, who died at the state’s Infectious Disease Hospital, had an underlying challenge of renal failure which worsened his case and eventually led to his death.

The health commissioner further disclosed that the deceased would be buried in accordance with laid down rules by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, adding that other COVID19 patients were in stable condition.

Meanwhile, in Osun State, a medical doctor tested positive for the virus.

The state Commissioner of Health, Dr Rafiu Isamotu, explained, in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Ismail Omipidan on Monday, that the medical doctor was based in Lagos but came into the state on Saturday to be with his family and suspected he was having the virus on arrival and checked into our Isolation Centre at Asubiaro rather than going home.

Isamotu added that the doctor’s sample was collected and sent for testing. ‘His result came out on Sunday and turned positive, he said.

The health commissioner stated: “The State on Sunday recorded another case of the COVID-19. He is a medical doctor based in Lagos who came into the State on Saturday to be with his family and suspected he was having the virus on arrival and checked into our Isolation Centre at Asubiaro rather than going home. His sample was collected and sent for testing. His result came out on Sunday and turned positive.

“We are glad that he didn’t have contact with anyone but took the initiative to check himself into our isolation centre immediately he arrived in Osun. That way, the virus was contained.”

Isamotu further reminded residents to adhere strictly to the dusk-to-dawn curfew in by 6am to 5pm between Monday and Thursday and the total lockdown from Friday to Sunday, put in place by the State government, saying that it was for the benefit of all.

“The cases recorded in the State recently were of those who came into the State and I want to appeal to our people to stop encouraging their relatives or friends to return to Osun as this might endanger the lives of our people.

“Let me also urge the residents to adhere strictly to the dusk to dawn curfew and lockdown measures put in place by the State government to contain the spread of the virus. This is for the benefit of all of us,” he added.
