Army Deploys 174 Troops for Peacekeeping Mission in Guinea-Bissau

The Nigerian Army has deployed 174 personnel for a crucial regional peacekeeping mission under the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB), reaffirming Nigeria’s longstanding commitment to international peace and security.

The troops, forming the Nigerian Company 4 for the mission, completed a rigorous five-week pre-deployment training at the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre (MLAILPKC) in Jaji, Kaduna State.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, the Chief of Operations (Army), Maj.-Gen. Uwem Bassey, represented by Maj.-Gen. Nansak Shagaya, commended the troops for their dedication and resilience during training. He urged them to uphold the core values of courage, integrity, professionalism, and discipline as they join efforts to stabilize Guinea-Bissau.

“This mission aims to support the safety and security of Guinea-Bissau’s citizens while enhancing regional peace and stability,” Bassey said. He reminded the soldiers of Nigeria’s proud legacy in global peacekeeping, with contributions in countries such as Lebanon, Liberia, The Gambia, South Sudan, and Guinea-Bissau.

He cautioned the troops against misconduct, especially sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA), emphasizing the United Nations’ zero-tolerance policy on such infractions. “Any violation will attract severe consequences,” he warned, quoting UN Secretary-General António Guterres: “We must demonstrate zero tolerance for sexual exploitation and abuse.”

In his remarks, the Commandant of MLAILPKC, Maj.-Gen. Ademola Adedoja, praised the graduating troops for their commitment and readiness, noting they are the latest in a long line of peacekeepers trained by the centre.

“Since its establishment, MLAILPKC has trained over 100,000 personnel who have served with distinction in various United Nations, African Union, and ECOWAS missions,” he said. “This graduation marks another milestone as these troops prepare to serve Nigeria and the continent with honour.”

Adedoja highlighted that the troops also underwent a comprehensive medical screening conducted by the Nigerian Army Medical Corps to ensure their readiness for deployment.

He commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, for his strategic vision and support, which he said has positioned the centre as a UN-accredited Centre of Excellence in peace support operations.

“As peacekeepers, your actions will define the image of the Nigerian Army and the nation,” Adedoja reminded the troops. “I urge you to display utmost professionalism and respect for local customs throughout your mission.”
