Air Force Investigates Outcome of Rivers Anti-Bunkering Air Raid

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has carried out precise airstrikes that destroyed clusters of illegal crude oil refining sites in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, as part of sustained efforts to curb oil theft, economic sabotage, and environmental pollution in the Niger Delta region.

According to a statement by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, the operation was executed on 7 October 2025 by the Air Component conducting counter–oil theft missions in the area.

Ejodame explained that NAF aircraft, acting on credible intelligence and aerial surveillance, identified active refining clusters concealed deep within a forested area near Owaza. The aircrew subsequently engaged and neutralised the illegal sites, disrupting ongoing refining activities.

He noted that the mission was part of ongoing precision strikes to dismantle criminal networks and restore environmental safety across oil-producing communities.

However, the Air Force said its attention had been drawn to a statement by a group alleging that the airstrikes may have affected a local gin distillery in Umuebele community, though no casualties were reported.

“In line with its Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan (CHMR-AP), the NAF has initiated necessary steps to verify this situation,” Ejodame said.

He reaffirmed the Service’s adherence to international best practices, adding that all NAF operations are intelligence-driven, precise, and guided by a firm commitment to protect civilian lives and property.

“The Nigerian Air Force remains committed to carrying out its constitutional mandate of defending the nation’s territorial integrity and supporting other security agencies in curbing criminal activities, while ensuring transparency and accountability in its operations,” he added.
