The English Premier League revealed that two more players from two different clubs tested positive for coronavirus, days after six other players tested positive for the virus.
This is coming just three weeks after a proposed restart of the season.
Out of the 996 players and club staff that were tested for COVID-19 over three days in last week, “two have tested positive from two clubs,” said an EPL statement.
“Players or club staff who have tested positive will now self-isolate for a period of seven days.”
Previously, on May 17 and 18, out of the 748 individuals that were tested for the virus disease, six tested positive from three clubs.
Among them were Watford defender, Adrian Mariappa as well as two members of the club’s staff.
According to the statement, “the six… are still within their seven-day self-isolation period” and did not feature in the recent round of testing.
“The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency.
“No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing.”
Recall that the English Premier League clubs had unanimously agreed to stage 1 of ‘Project Restart’.
After cordial talks among the 20 clubs, a path was cleared for players to return to training last week Tuesday, ahead of a possible return of matches on June 19.
But despite the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in the league, some top officials of the league are still hopeful for a restart of the season.
Premier League chief executive, Richard Masters had on Friday said he was confident the top-flight season would resume in mid-June.
