Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he will resign from office if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu loses the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State in the 2027 presidential election.
Wike made the declaration on Wednesday while speaking to members and leaders of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja.
The minister said he would take personal responsibility for the outcome of the election in the two territories, stressing that his position as FCT Minister would be difficult to defend if he could not secure support for the President in the nation’s capital.
“If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here,” Wike said.
He added that he would not wait to be removed from office if Tinubu lost in the FCT and Rivers State, saying he would voluntarily resign.
“If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister,” he stated.
Wike also declared that he would work to ensure Tinubu secures victory in Rivers State, his home state, as well as the FCT.
According to him, his political commitment to Tinubu is not limited to his continued membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, stressing that he is prepared to mobilise support for the President across political lines.
“For the Presidency, it is Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he declared.
The minister also spoke about political arrangements ahead of the 2027 elections, revealing that a broad-based political structure was being developed in the FCT.
He said the arrangement would bring politicians and supporters from different political parties together to support candidates for various elective positions while backing Tinubu for the presidency.
Wike expressed support for former FCT Senator Philip Aduda, describing him as a grassroots politician, while also identifying other candidates being supported for legislative positions.
He said the political structure would extend across the six area councils of the FCT, with the objective of consolidating support ahead of the 2027 elections.
The minister’s declaration comes amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political parties and influential figures already positioning themselves for the contest.
Wike has remained an outspoken supporter of President Tinubu’s administration despite his continued membership of the PDP.
His latest statement further underscores his commitment to Tinubu’s 2027 presidential bid and his determination to mobilise political support for the President in both the FCT and Rivers State.
