US President, Donald Trump announced the country is terminating its relationship with the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Trump, on Friday, claimed WHO had failed to adequately respond to the coronavirus pandemic because China has “total control” over it, hence the decision to pull out of the health agency.

He said the Chinese officials “ignored” their reporting obligations to the WHO and pressured the United Nation’s health agency to mislead the world when the virus was first discovered.

Trump told journalists, “China has total control over the World Health Organisation despite only paying $40 million per year compared to what the United States has been paying, which is approximately $450 million a year.

“The world needs answers from China on the virus. We must have transparency. Why is it that China shut off infected people from Wuhan to all other parts of China?

“It didn’t go to Beijing, it went nowhere else, but they allowed them to freely travel throughout the world, including Europe and the United States.”

The US President had, in a letter to the WHO Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus on May 18, demanded reforms for the health agency and threatened to halt funding from the body’s top donor altogether if it does not commit to the reforms within 30 days.

“Because they have failed to make the requested and greatly needed reforms, we will be today terminating our relationship with the World Health Organization,” he said.
