The management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has reacted to the rape and eventual death of its 100-level microbiology student, Uwaila Omozuwa.

Meridian Spy reported earlier, Omozuwa was assaulted with an extinguisher and raped by unknown men inside a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) church at Ikpoba Hill, Benin.

The 22-year-old eventually died on Saturday midnight at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) where she was rushed to after the attack, according to a family source.

In a statement signed by UNIBEN Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire and obtained by Meridian Spy, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami, speaking on behalf of the management, said the institution was shocked to receive the news of the deceased undergraduate, noting that the actions are condemnable and should not be condoned by any society.

Salami said the current pandemic was already hard on everyone and that compounding it with inflicting additional pain on any family is a wicked act.

She commiserated with the bereaved family on the loss of their dear daughter and “prayed God to grant her soul, peaceful rest”.

According to the statement, a delegation was also sent by the university’s management to commiserate with the bereaved family.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution further used the opportunity to call on students of the Institution and indeed all young people “to be wary of the company they keep and the places that they visit”.

Meanwhile, the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of Omozuwa.

“The @PoliceNG has been mandated to identify, arrest and prosecute anyone found culpable in her death. The Violence Against Persons (VAP) Law is in effect in our state,” Governor Obaseki tweeted.

“Using this law, we would ensure to investigate what exactly transpired and deal decisively with the those found complicit in the dastardly act, whoever they might be. #JusticeForUwa.”
