Two die, scores injured as tanker, tricycle collide in Ibadan – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed a fatal road traffic crash that occurred on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at about 1:30 p.m. along the Challenge-Gate axis at Bere, under the RS11.32 Oluyole Unit Command in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The crash involved six vehicles, including a DAF tanker with registration number FMT662XA belonging to BOVAS, and five tricycles bearing registration numbers JND799VE, TDE346QF, WEL205VD, TDE242QU, and GBR242QD.

Preliminary findings indicate that 11 persons were involved in the incident. Of this number, three sustained varying degrees of injuries, while two others—a male and a female adult—lost their lives.

FRSC personnel responded promptly to the scene, evacuating the injured victims to nearby medical facilities. The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the Adeoyo Hospital morgue. The crashed vehicles were also cleared to restore traffic flow, with the tricycles towed to Mapo Police Station, while the tanker was recovered by the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA).

Investigations attributed the crash primarily to dangerous driving associated with excessive speeding. Officials reported that the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle while in motion, triggering a multiple collision involving the tricycles.

Reacting to the incident, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed concern over the persistent rate of speed-related crashes on Nigerian roads, describing speeding as a leading cause of fatal road traffic incidents in the country. He noted that excessive speed reduces reaction time and significantly increases the severity of crashes, often converting survivable situations into fatal ones.

He stressed that speeding remains a major hazard on highways and urged motorists to prioritize safety over haste, emphasizing that safe arrival is more important than speed of travel.

The Corps Marshal also cautioned operators of heavy-duty vehicles, particularly tanker drivers, to exercise maximum care, adhere strictly to speed regulations, and maintain full control of their vehicles, especially in high-traffic urban areas.

He further called on fleet operators to strengthen driver training and enforce compliance with safety standards, while urging tricycle operators and other vulnerable road users to remain vigilant and avoid risky behavior that could expose them to danger
