‘There Are Only 7 Doctors To 131 Health Centres’, Medical Association Laments Inadequate Personnel In Ekiti

The National Association of Government General and Medical Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) has revealed that there are only seven doctors serving 131 healthcare centres in Ekiti State, lamenting shortage of medical personnel in the state.

This revelation is coming amid subsisting directive by Kayode Fayemi, Ekiti State governor, to health workers in the state to call off their ongoing strike, so as not to put him in a situation where he has to invoke the ‘no work, no pay rule’.

However, according to a statement jointly signed by Kolawole Adeniyi, NAGGMDP and Toyese Adeleye, its secretary, the strike by the doctors was to save the primary and secondary health care in the state from total collapse.

“It is not only a moral burden on us but also a clarion call,” they said in the statement.

“It is for the sake of the innocent people of Ekiti State, who unfortunately are at the receiving end.

“For the avoidance of doubt, at the primary health care level, there are a total of seven doctors working in 131 health centres.

“Government’s claim that it has in its employ over 300 doctors and cumulatively 700 doctors in Ekiti State is an obvious digression from the point.

“The primary and secondary levels of care are suffering obvious neglect.”
