The True Definition of One-party State By Reno Omokri

A one-party state can only exist in a situation where the state allows only one party to flourish through coercion, and citizens are not given the freedom of association to freely choose which political party to belong to.

The literal dictionary definition of a one-party state is a jurisdiction where all opposition parties are either proscribed or prevented from having full participation in elections.

However, in a situation where Nigerian citizens, having and enjoying total freedom of association, choose, of their own free will, to join a political party, including the ruling party, that is not a one-party state.

During the 2003 elections, the People’s Democratic Party won in every state of the Southwest except Lagos. The PDP also won in other states that had been strongholds of the opposition.

Nigeria was not a one-party state then, and we are not a one-party state now. We are a thriving multiparty democracy. I urge all political actors not to overheat the polity because the ruling party is doing what all parties should be doing: wooing politicians and the general public into its fold.

Why are people joining the APC under Tinubu?

Our economy grew by 4.23% in the last quarter. To put this in context, the United Kingdom’s economy grew by only 0.2% within the same period.

Also, oil theft has been reduced to less than 10,000 Barrels Per Day, a sixteen-year low. The result is that Nigeria has overshot its OPEC quota for three consecutive months for the first time in over a decade and is set to do the same for the fourth month, producing an average of 1.71 million Barrels Per Day.

Additionally, Nigeria’s total income has increased by 411%, even as the nation generated revenues of ₦3.65 trillion in September 2025, compared to the ₦711 billion recorded in May 2023, which was the last month of the Buhari era.

Also, after a record trade surplus last year, Nigeria appears set to beat its 2024 figure. Our trade surplus rose 44.3% in Q2 to ₦7.46 trillion, up from ₦5.17 trillion in Q1.

Finally, on this score, our economy expanded by $67 billion in just two years, moving Nigeria’s GDP from a ₦269.29 trillion economy on May 29, 2023, when Asiwaju became President, to ₦372.8 trillion today.

That is why people are attracted to the President and his party.

Having said that, I fully understand and support my political twin brother, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce’s reasons for resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party and joining the All Progressives Congress.

From the Governor to the ward councillor, Bayelsa State has decided based on their belief in the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration, its track record, and policy direction. I salute them for putting Nigeria above partisan and ethnic concerns.
