Police Ban Vehicles Without Plate Numbers Ahead of Anambra Governorship Election

With less than three weeks to the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State, the Police Command has warned motorists against driving vehicles without plate numbers or with covered registration plates across the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, who issued the warning in Awka on Thursday, said the practice constitutes a serious security breach, particularly at a time when security agencies are intensifying efforts to guarantee peace before, during, and after the election.

According to him, unregistered and covered vehicles are often used by criminals to perpetrate crimes, evade arrest, or disrupt public order.

“The Command will not tolerate the indiscriminate use of vehicles without plate numbers or with covered registration plates in any part of the state,” Orutugu said. “Such vehicles will be impounded, and their owners prosecuted in accordance with existing laws.”

He directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Tactical Commanders to intensify patrols, conduct stop-and-search operations, and enforce full compliance with the directive across Anambra.

The Commissioner urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by adhering to traffic and security regulations and to promptly report any suspicious movement or persons to the nearest police station.

He also advised the public to use the Command’s emergency numbers — 112 or 07039194332 — to report security concerns during the election period.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement, said the directive is part of broader measures to ensure a credible, peaceful, and secure election in Anambra State.
