The Economic Sustainability Committee (ESC), led by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has recommended that the Federal Government considers suspending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp exercises for two years.

According to ESC report presented to President Muhammadu Buhari last week and seen by The Cable, the committee recommended the consideration of suspension of NYSC camps for 24 months, while allowing deployment to places of primary assignment.

The committee noted that it will ensure that there is no backlog in the National Service placement pipeline.

“The immediate focus in the Education sector is to address the disruptions caused by the pandemic and ensuing social distancing measures at all levels of education,” the report read.

“Practical steps will be taken to minimise disruption to learning, utilising technology as appropriate. Specifically, virtual learning will be implemented (either online or through broadcast), virtual convocation ceremonies or issuance of certificates (with postponed ceremonies) should be implemented to continue educational progression.

“In similar context, consideration will be given to suspending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp Exercises for at least 24 months while allowing deployment to places of primary assignment.

“This will ensure that there is no backlog in the National Service placement pipeline.”

Recall the NYSC had, on March 18, suspended the orientation course for its Batch A stream I corps members and shut its camp nationwide as a proactive measure to prevent the outbreak of coronavirus in the country.

MERIDIAN SPY reported days ago the NYSC is set to conclude the 2020 Batch A Stream I Orientation Course.

The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim said strategies are been mapped out by the NYSC Management to take care of various scenarios, and would be presented to the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 through the NCDC for guidance.
