The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has included Saturday in the days Nigerians can enrol for the National Identity Number (NIN).

This was made known in a Twitter post by the commission on Monday.

NIMC noted that the decision to include Saturdays in the days of enrolment was taken in order to serve Nigerians better.

It added that the extension, which took effect on December 19, cuts across all the 36 states and the federal capital territory.

“In a bid to serve the public better, the HM MoC&DE @DrIsaPantami has directed the NIMC to extend NIN enrolment to Saturdays, starting from the 19th of December, 2020,” NIMC wrote.

“This extension cuts across all 36 States and the FCT.”

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had given telecommunications companies a two-week ultimatum to block SIM cards not registered with NIN.

Following the directive, the federal government approved the licensing of 173 centres and 30 state government institutions to conduct enrolment of persons into the National Identity Database (NIDB).

The government also ordered the cancellation of the N20 fee earlier charged for retrieval of the NIN on mobile networks.

This triggered criticisms as many Nigerians complained about the short notice.
