Liverpool FC have announced the departure of head coach Arne Slot, bringing an end to the Dutchman’s two-year spell at Anfield despite leading the club to a Premier League title during his tenure.
In a statement released on Friday, Liverpool confirmed that Slot would leave his role with immediate effect and that the process of appointing a successor was already underway. The club thanked the Dutch coach for his contribution and acknowledged his role in delivering the club’s historic 20th English league title.
Slot arrived at Liverpool in 2024 as the man tasked with succeeding Jürgen Klopp, a challenge many considered one of the most difficult jobs in world football. He made an immediate impact, guiding the Reds to the Premier League title in his first season and becoming the first Dutch manager to win England’s top-flight crown.
However, the 2025/26 campaign proved far more difficult. Liverpool endured an inconsistent season, finishing fifth in the league and missing out on their major objectives despite significant investment in the squad. The club’s poor form during the closing stages of the season ultimately convinced the hierarchy that a change was necessary.
Reports indicate that Liverpool’s decision was reached after an extensive review of the season, with club officials concluding that a new direction was required to restore the team to title-challenging status.
Despite the disappointing end, Liverpool stressed that Slot’s legacy remains intact. The club described his departure as a difficult decision and praised his professionalism, leadership and the success he brought during his time at Anfield.
Attention will now turn to the search for a replacement, with several names already being linked to the vacancy. Among those reportedly under consideration is former AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, who has emerged as one of the early favourites for the role.
