Kaduna State House of Assembly has approved full surgical castration as penalty for anyone convicted of rape in the state.

The state assembly lawmakers made the approval on Friday.

Hafsat Baba, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, who spoke about the new rape penalty, described it as a welcome development, adding that it will serve as a “deterrent” for rapists.

The approval of the new penalty for rape offenders now awaits the assent of Nasir El-Rufai, the state Governor, for it to be passed into law.
