President Ahmed Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to Nigerian journalists and media establishments on Wednesday in Abuja, acknowledging their crucial role in the struggle against military dictatorship.

In his nationwide address commemorating Democracy Day, he celebrated the bravery of journalists who stood for free speech and civil liberties, often at great personal risk.

Similarly, the President recognized media outlets such as The Punch, Guardian, National Concord, Tribune, The News/Tempo, and TELL Magazines, which were proscribed by the military authorities and had their journalists jailed for their unwavering commitment to the truth.

Tinubu hailed the power of the people and the power of ideas, which ultimately triumphed over the might of the military government, bringing an end to the dictatorship.

According to him, “The dismal fortress exists no longer. The power of an idea, the power of the people proved more potent than all the guns and munitions, than all the guns, the munitions and the threats of the strongmen.”
