Journalist and editor-in-chief of Secrets Reporters, Fejiro Oliver, has been arrested by operatives of the Force Intelligence Department (FID). He was arrested on Thursday on the orders of Delta State Governor, Mr. Sheriff Oborevwori.
Oliver, a well-known journalist and critic of the Delta State government, was arrested at his office in Abuja and taken to Force Headquarters, where he was confronted with a petition signed by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s Special Adviser on Security. The petition accused him of “cyberstalking” the Governor.
Within 24 hours, Oliver was flown to Asaba and is now being held at the Delta State Police Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID). His lawyers are expected to meet him in custody.
Before being transferred, Oliver reportedly told investigators that he bore no personal grudge against the Governor, stressing that as a Delta indigene, he was only committed to raising issues affecting the state.
Civil society groups and media advocates have condemned the arrest, describing it as an attempt to stifle press freedom. Colleagues of the journalist also raised concerns over the speed of his transfer from Abuja to Delta State, noting that the move came after his repeated criticism of the Governor’s policies.
The Meridianspy reports that , as at press time, Oliver remains in detention in Asaba while calls for his release continue to gather momentum. His arrest is another setback to press freedom in Nigeria. For over a decade, Oliver has used his platform as a voice against injustice and corruption within public offices in Nigeria, advocating for sociopolitical change.
