Kano State Governor, Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, has formed a high-powered committee to organize a conference to examine the contentious issues surrounding the herders/farmers clashes and make recommendations for peace.

The conference committee headed by a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, has 26 other top members, including the Pro-Chancellor, Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Prof. Jibrila Dahiru Amin; and former SSG, Niger State and Professor of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ibadan; Prof. Muhammad Yahaya Kuta among others.

Inaugurating the committee on Thursday in Abuja, Ganduje said their term of reference was to plan and organise a befitting national conference on farmers/herders conflicts in Nigeria and submit a report with observations for appropriate action.

He said the committee’s job was also to examine the ECOWAS Protocol concerning the movement of cattle across member countries, of the sub-region.

The governor explained that the decision by the Kano State government to host a national conference on “Livestock Reforms and Mitigation of Associated Conflicts in Nigeria” was in recognition of the fact that the primary business of government is to ensure law and order.

Responding, Jega said the herder-farmer clash was a very serious issue of national concern.

“Politics seems to create misunderstanding which affects rational deliberations on how to address such important national issue. But a conversation on this devoid of politics would help drive reforms on this very important issue,” he said.
