The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed the release of former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa. Bawa was released on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, after being detained by the DSS for over four months.

DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, confirmed Bawa’s release in a statement issued on Wednesday. Afunanya did not provide any further details about Bawa’s release, including the reasons for his detention or the conditions of his release.

Meridian Spy reports that Bawa was suspended from his position as EFCC chairman in June 2023 by President Bola Tinubu.

The suspension was to allow for an investigation into allegations of corruption and abuse of office against Bawa.

The DSS’s release of Bawa comes after months of pressure from civil society groups and the media.

These groups had called for Bawa’s release, arguing that his detention was unlawful and politically motivated.
