Manchester United and Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has described Cristiano Ronaldo as the greatest icon of Portugal’s national team and the country, reaffirming the veteran forward’s enduring status in Portuguese football.
Fernandes said he recently spoke with Ronaldo and personally expressed his admiration for his former international teammate.
“I spoke with Cristiano Ronaldo and told him that he is and will always remain the greatest icon of our national team and our country,” Fernandes said, according to a post by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on X.
The midfielder also dismissed suggestions of divisions within the Portuguese squad, insisting that the team remains united.
“Our national team is united, not divided,” Fernandes said.
Fernandes added that any issues concerning the team should be handled internally and resolved in a manner that serves all parties.
Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus also stressed Ronaldo’s significance to the national team and the country, describing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner as a symbol of both.
“I can’t ignore Cristiano Ronaldo topic. Cris is a symbol of the Portuguese national team. He is a symbol of Portugal,” Jesus said.
The coach, however, declined to elaborate further, saying there would be an opportunity to address the matter in greater detail after the match.
