The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has assured that the Service is committed to implementing the directive of President Bola Tinubu to remove tariffs and import duties on key food staples for the next six months.
Adeniyi made this known in his keynote address at the 2nd Economic Confidential Lecture and Book Presentation in Abuja on Tuesday.
“We are committed to enforcing these policies in a manner that facilitates trade, supports economic growth, and ultimately contributes to the food security and well-being of every Nigerian.”
“The removal of tariffs and import duties on rice, wheat, maize, and sorghum is aimed at driving down food prices and improving accessibility for the average Nigerian,” he said.
The Custom’s boss emphasised that the government’s multi-faceted approach to addressing challenges in the food sector is crucial
“From boosting domestic production to facilitating imports, from leveraging technology to fostering partnerships, the government is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to ensure food security for all Nigerians,” he added.
He equally noted that the success of these initiatives hinges on effective implementation, and the NCS plays a crucial role in supporting and translating these policies into tangible benefits for citizens.
“As the gatekeepers to our nation’s international trade, we are at the forefront of supporting and translating these policies into tangible benefits for our citizens,” Adeniyi said.
