The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force is strengthening its preparations to ensure peaceful and secure conduct of the 2027 general elections.
Disu gave the assurance through his representative at a stakeholders’ engagement in Abuja, where election security, political interference, electoral violence and the need for professional policing were discussed.
The IGP said the police would enhance intelligence gathering, strategic deployment of personnel and surveillance to prevent violence and disruptions before, during and after the elections.
He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to protecting voters, electoral officials and materials, while ensuring that security personnel discharge their duties professionally and without partisan influence.
The police leadership also stressed the importance of collaboration among security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), political parties and other stakeholders in creating a safe environment for credible elections.
Disu’s assurance comes amid growing preparations for the 2027 polls, with stakeholders calling for stronger safeguards against electoral violence, intimidation and other practices capable of undermining public confidence in the democratic process.
